The 2015 Fantasy Film League Playoffs Season for 2015 has officially begun! With the release of Black Mass and Sicario last week, we finally have some draft picks to talk about and some numbers to update the scoreboard with!
Black Mass opened with a wide release to generally positive reviews. Praising both Depp’s and Edgerton’s performances in addition to the gripping story, Black Mass garnered a 75% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.0 User Score on IMDb. While coming in 2nd in the box office to Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, Black Mass still raked in 22.6 million. With a budget of only 53 million, Black Mass is well on its way to a positive gross margin.
Sicario’s initial limited release was only 6 theaters, but will be getting a wider release in October. Despite the limited release, Sicario still made nearly $500,000. Compared to Black Mass, Sicario actually made more money per theater. Billed as a smart action thriller, the reviews bode well for Sicario as it enters a wider release in the coming weeks. Sicario earned a 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and tied Black Mass with an 8.0 IMDb User Score.
Solid starts with strong films from both Jordan and Scott! With The Martian and Steve Jobs releasing early next month, be sure to stay tuned for more updates.
